Lovely Bubbles

I found some very pretty table knives for $1 each. How could I pass that up? Surely I could use the handles for something fun. Why not an upscaled version of childhood bubbles?

Look for old or new knives with hollow handles. Some knives have solid flat handles that won't work for this application.

The bubble liquid container had to have an opening large enough to 9Apps Download accommodate the bubble wand. Starbucks Frappaccino (available in a four pack at any grocery store) was perfect. I bought a piece of copper wire in the electronics department of my local hardware store. I don't know the gauge but I think it's probably 16. Cut about 18 inches long. Since the wire is thin and the knife handle chunky, I thought I should use a bead to visually bridge that gap. Obviously, choose one that has a hole large enough to allow for the wire to thread through.

I used a hacksaw to saw the knife blade from the handle. A file is needed to remove any burrs. Notice that the end of the blade is still in the handle. Usually you don't see this in old knives (this was new). Old and new will work.

Place the middle of the 18" length of wire over a large wooden dowel. This is a closet pole but a broom would work just as well. Hold the ends then twist the dowel for about 5" or however long you wish your wand to be.

Thread one end of the wires through the bead and twist the other over it. I cut the ends about 1" long, pushed them into the end of the knife handle then used epoxy to secure them.

When the glue has set, use needle nose pliers to form the heart shape to the end of the wand.

I made the labels by altering some from the Graphics Fairy. Download the labels here. I printed mine on glossy sticker paper, but copy paper will work. Spray the labels with Krylon's Workable Fixative so that the print won't run when it comes in contact with the bubble liquid.

I was going to spray paint the bottle top but it was a cold rainy day so I glued on a silk flower instead  after adding a few drops of red food coloring to the liquid. (I bought my bubble liquid but there are a number of recipes for homemade ones on the net). Apply the label then attach the wand with double stick scotch tape. A length of organza ribbon completes the ensemble.

Bubbles were never so chic or so over the top.
