Pearl Knotted Jewelry

Traditional Pearl Knotting Bracelet

Materials and Tools:

strand of pearls
Griffin size 4 silk cord for knotting, with the needle attached
2 clamshell-style knot hiders
toggle clasp
knotting tweezers
Hypo-tube cement glue
chain-nose pliers
scissors

Steps:

1. Unravel the silk cord completely from the card. Remove the kinks in the cord with a small amount of water.

2. Make a good size knot in the end of the cord opposite the twisted wire needle.

3. Slide one of the knot hiders, open end first, over the knot.

4. Form an overhand knot by draping the cord over your hand and holding it in place with your thumb. Note: All of the knots are formed the same way!

5. Loop the cord around your hand again.

6. Pull the tail end of the cord (the end with the needle attached) through the loop on the back of your hand.

7. Using the tweezers, reach through the loop and grab the cord right next to the pearl (or knot hider) using the tweezers’ tip. Note: The tweezers act as a place holder.

8. Carefully slide your hand out while still gripping the cord, leaving the tweezers in the loop.

9. Pull the tail end of the cord to close the loop and form the knot.

10. Remove the tweezers when the knot is snug up against the knot hider or pearl.

11. Put on your next pearl and make your overhand knot snug up against the pearl.

12. Continue adding pearls and making knots until you are about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from your desired length (this will allow for the clasp).

13. Once you have added all of your pearls, make a knot and add your second knot hider with the closed end first.

14. Make a good sized knot inside the knot hider.

15. Place glue on the knots inside of the knot hiders. Let dry and cut the excess cord.

16. Attach the clasp to the hook on the knot hider and close the knot hider.

"Tin Cup" Style Necklace

Materials and Tools:

2 clamshell-style knot hiders
toggle clasp
beads of your choice
Griffin size 6 silk knotting cord, with needle attached
coffee stirrer
knotting tweezers
Hypo-tube cement glue
bead design board
chain-nose pliers
scissors

Steps:

1. Design your necklace on a bead design board or other work surface and determine the space between each "station."

2. Cut the coffee stirrer to match the length of the space. The stirrer will serve as a spacer and will ensure the beads are an equal distance apart. A good length is 1/2 to 3/4 inches long, depending on your design.

3. Begin the necklace with a good size knot following the above instructions for the bracelet.

4. After the first knot hider and knot are in place, string on your first "station" and form an overhand knot snug up against the last bead.

5. Slide on your pre-cut stirrer (treat it as you would a bead) and make a knot snug up against the stirrer.

6. Slide your stirrer off of the cord over the knot.

7. Continue adding stations and knots until you are about 1 inch away from your desired length (this allows for the toggle clasp). Remember to end the necklace with a station and a knot.

8. Put on the second knot hider, glue the knots inside, close, and add your clasp.
